Items required for Lab #7 Archimedes Principle

We ask you find a wooden stick, like a twig from a tree, and a tall container to hold water, like a bucket. They must meet these requirements:

  1. The twig is relatively straight, and have uniform thickness;
  2. The twig must be at least 20 cm long. Longer twig is better, but it must be able to float in the tall containter vertically, like the picture below. Find a twist tie to hold the twig, or you can use your fingers.
  3. If you want to use a wooden chopstick, it is okay, as long as the thickness of the chopstick gradually inceases in one way. Make sure it can float in your container vertically both ways.
  4. It is recommended that you mark the stick by 10 equal divisions, especially if your stick has a gradually increasing thickness. See the picture below.
